Dr. Francis Barber is a board certified dermatologist and dermatopathologist.
He is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and a member of the
American Society of Dermatopathology. Dr. Barber graduated from the Georgetown
University School of Foreign Service in three years with a B.S. in International
Economics. His career goals changed and he spent a year accumulating extra
science courses and was admitted to the Georgetown University School of
Medicine. After obtaining his MD degree and having participated in the Navy
medical scholarship program Dr. Barber did his medical internship at the
National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda. He then served as a general medical
officer in Lakehurst, New Jersey before doing his dermatology residency at Naval
Hospital San Diego. He served as a dermatologist at Naval Hospital Corpus
Christi, Texas and Bethesda ,MD. While in Bethesda, Dr. Barber completed a
dermatopathology fellowship at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.
Having completed his training Dr. Barber was a staff dermatologist and
dermatopathologist at Naval Hospital San Diego before transferring to the
Naval Reserve and joining Bernardo Dermatology in 1989. He volunteered for
13 years on the staff of the dermatology department at the Naval Hospital.
Dr. Barber is certified for special competency in dermatopathology by
the American Boards of Pathology and Dermatology. He has held teaching
positions at Naval Hospitals San Diego and Bethesda as well as a volunteer
position at Georgetown University School of Medicine.
Dr. Barber believes that being a clinical dermatologist as well as a
dermatopathologist gives him special insight into skin diagnosis and treatment.
He frequently tells his patients that errors can be prevented when the same
person who saw the lesion on the person sees the lesion under the microscope.
Dr. Barber’s other interests include hiking, watersports , and history.
He is married with two adult children.
