Sclerotherapy is a popular method of eliminating unwanted spider veins in which a solution is injected into the veins. This causes an irritation to the inner lining of the vessels resulting in their closure. A small gauge needle is used to perform the procedure and most patients relate the discomfort to that of an ant bite. The majority of patients who have sclerotherapy performed have a significant improvement or complete clearance of their veins with one to several treatments.
We use polidocanol (Asclera®), which is an FDA-approved dilute detergent, and one of the safest sclerosants available. It boasts one of the lowest incidences of post-procedure bruising and hyperpigmentation, allergic reaction, and pain. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes and results can last years.
